The adult Red-belted Clearwing moth is on the wing between June and early August. It is very local and scarce in Warwickshire with only a handful of records since the turn of the 20th Century although its distribution has expanded in recently years as more people are attracting males using pheromone lures.

The Red-belted Clearwing moth can be found in orchards, gardens and hedgerows, indeed, anywhere where the larval foodplants occur.

Larval Foodplants

The larval foodplants are fruit trees including Apple (Malus spp.), Pear (Pyrus spp.) and Almond (Prunus amygdalus). The larvae feed on the inner bark of stems of the larval foodplant.

Pheromone lures can be purchased from Anglian Lepidoterists Supplies.

Distribution

With more people using phromone lures, it is likley that many more locations for the Red-belted Clearwing will be discovered in the future. Urban and suburban gardens where mature cultivated apple, Pear and Almond trees occur are likely to be most productive. Old orchards are also likely to hold colonies of this species.
